One cannot think ‘Sex and the City’ and not think ‘fashion.’ The show is considered one of the most fashionable television shows of all-time. Costume designer Patricia Field curated an enviable designer wardrobe for each of the starring ladies. But it seems, as Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte “navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life in their 30’s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50’s,” they will be doing it in flat, uninspiring fashion.
Fashion fans are disappointed after seeing the uninspiring looks in the first image from the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot titled, ‘And Just Like That,’ released on Instagram. Just one day before, @justlikethatmax posted images showing bright colors and unique accessories, but our first look at the ladies featured basic black and white for Carrie and Charlotte, and Miranda washed out by beige and pastels. If you’re thinking Ms. Patricia Field couldn’t have pulled these looks, you’re correct. The costume designer is busy with Netflix’s ‘Emily in Paris’ and will not be part of the reboot, but passed the reins to her assistant costume designer on ‘Sex and the City,’ Molly Rogers.
This first image is making fans nervous that the fashion in the reboot won’t live up to its illustrious original. Journalist Jagger Blaec wrote “The biggest critique I’m seeing thus far, is how unseasoned the style is compared to the show’s traditionally iconic fashions.” One twitter user popped an Old Navy label over the image, and sadly, it looks believable. Older fans of ‘Sex and the City’ were also disappointed and hoping these “day one” looks are not indicative of the show’s perspective on “mature style.” Only time will tell if ‘Just Like That’ can live up to the iconic fashion status of ‘Sex and the City,’ but it’s off to a rocky start.
