It drives me nuts when people say, “Have another, you’re eating for two!” Part of having a healthy pregnancy is maintaining a healthy diet.
We are emotional, hormonal, and suffering from virtually uncontrollable craving. Choosing the right foods becomes harder when everyone around you is promoting bad eating habits. Being pregnant doesn’t justify an additional serving, an extra slice of cake, or a second breakfast (although I love second breakfast). Yes, pregnant women need to eat more often. We need constant energy and with the amount of room the baby takes up, we can hold far less at a time, requiring us to eat less food but more often. However, pregnant women only need an additional 200 calories a day. Do you know what 200 calories looks like? Check out this video from Asap SCIENCE.

Yes that is definitely a misconception.

Thanks for addressing this! And because 99% of people out there are already eating more than an extra 200 calories a day, most pregnant women should be cutting back. Doesn’t the average american eat something like 3500 calories a day?

I got the impression that people make the comment …your eating for two.. to be polite. As to not offend the pregnant woman who is dealing with cravings and feeling sensitive.
