Jennifer Lopez announced via Instagram yesterday that she is the face of Versace’s Spring/Summer 2020 campaign. According to the brand, the campaign “depicts vanity and uncensored expression as a form of self-love” and “explores the blurring of lines between public and private life in today’s internet society.” The images have a high-tech feel and feature the singer-actress searching her name with images of herself in the background, presumably the results of her search. The keyboard and images appearing on the clear wall “screens” adds a futuristic touch to the tech-themed campaign, which isn’t surprising considering twenty years ago, Jennifer Lopez did something pretty miraculous…she helped shape the internet, or at least the way we search it.
While social media celebrities world-wide now attempt to “break the internet” (most notably her Facebook Portal commercial co-star, Kim Kardashian), Jennifer Lopez inspired a key component of it most of us use daily, Google Images. “Silicon Valley invented the visual part of that search machine as a response to the fact that everybody was talking about J-Lo’s plunging palm print but couldn’t find the pictures,” wrote Anders Christian Madsen, Fashion Critic at British Vogue.
He is, of course, speaking of of her famous plunging palm print dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards. Ms. Lopez wow’d audiences last year by hitting the runway and closing the Versace Spring/Summer 2020 RTW show in an updated version of the iconic dress. That moment from the 50-year-old, mother of two elicited a collective “Yasss, Girl!” from women (and moms) everywhere, so its no surprise that she’s continuing her collaboration with the brand.
“To me, Versace represents empowerment and putting something beautiful out into the world. It’s a dream to collaborate with my friend Donatella again on this gorgeous campaign and to create something new and fresh out of a piece of iconic fashion history,” Lopez said.
The campaign was photographed by Mert and Marcus (duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott) and styled by Jacob K. Jennifer Lopez embodies the tanned, powerful, sexy goddess that is the Versace woman, once again reminding us that adjectives like ‘strong’ and ‘sexy’ are not just for the young and childless. She’s featured wearing a draped cutout dress, a sculpted blazer dress, a showgirl-esque plunging mini, and a palm printed suit, all accessorized with gold jewelry.
